The Westfield UTC in La Jolla has officially become my favorite shopping mall in San Diego. There’s water bowls for dogs throughout the mall and every store we visited, including Sephora, Anthropologie, Madewell, and Lululemon, welcomed Hoku inside with open arms. (Of course, we made sure to ask first.) The mall even has its own little fenced dog park called Bark Park where pups can play, do their business and socialize. Hoku practically had the place all to himself and did his usual dog park perimeter check before settling down on a patch of cool grass to people watch.
The only place where dogs are absolutely not allowed is the food court, which is completely understandable for health reasons.
It was Hoku’s first time at a mall and I’m pleased to report that he was on his best doggy behavior the entire time. He stuck by my side in stores and sat very politely for pettings from his many admirers, the cutest of which was a little boy from Japan who waited ever so patiently for us to notice that he wanted to meet Hoku while he excitedly exclaimed to his parents, “Shibaken! Shibaken!”
After a bit of shopping, we put our feet up and basked in the sun in the Palm Plaza with a drink from Shake Smart and listened to live Hawaiian music. It was a wonderfully relaxing, sunny SoCal day and I’m happy to have found a new place where Hoku and I can spend a day together.
